Things to Do in Split's Old Town

Old Stoney sits inside the historic core of Split, so the best of the city is quite literally on your doorstep. Here is how we'd spend a few days — starting with the Roman palace you're staying inside of, and fanning out to the sea, the hills, and the islands.

Diocletian's Palace

Built by the Roman emperor Diocletian around 305 AD, the palace isn't a museum you visit — it's a living neighbourhood of cafes, homes, and shops woven into 1,700-year-old walls. From the apartment it's a 2-minute walk. Don't miss:

• The Peristyle — the central colonnaded square, most atmospheric early morning or after dark.
• Cathedral of St. Domnius — climb the bell tower for the best rooftop view over the Old Town and harbour.
• The Substructures (cellars) — vast Roman halls beneath the palace, cool on a hot day.
• The Vestibule — a domed rotunda where a cappella klapa singers often perform.
• Grgur Ninski statue — by the Golden Gate; rub his toe for luck.

The Riva & Marjan Hill

The palm-lined Riva promenade is a 5-minute stroll away — the place for a morning coffee or an evening drink watching the ferries come in. Keep walking west and you reach Marjan, the forested hill above the city, with shaded trails, old chapels, and viewpoints looking back over the red rooftops and out to the islands.

Beaches

Bačvice, Split's famous shallow sandy bay, is about a 15-minute walk east — home of picigin, the local ball game played in the shallows. For clearer water and pine shade, head to Kašjuni or Bene on the Marjan side.

Easy Day Trips

• Trogir — a UNESCO-listed medieval town, ~30 minutes by bus or car.
• Krka National Park — waterfalls and boardwalks, about an hour away.
• Hvar, Brač & Šolta — islands reachable by ferry or catamaran from the port, a 10-minute walk from the apartment.
• Blue Cave & Vis — a full-day boat excursion for the famous glowing grotto.
